One of my favorite marketers is Steven Resell. No, I am not promoting a product; just steering you into a resource to help you find that “secret” niche that you’ve been looking for. The truth is, there is no such thing as a secret niche but there are niches that have their own special audiences; people who will buy products related to that niche at the “drop of a hat”.

Imagine making yourself an expert in that niche either with a website promoting products or creating your own products for the people involved in it. You would be in “Hog Heaven” and that’s what most of us are searching for. You see, it just takes one niche, not hundreds, to make you a lot of money online.

I first met Steven on the “5 Bucks A Day” forum and to be honest, at the time I thought he was a know-all. He was doing nothing but giving his opinion on how to make money online. Fancy that hey, someone giving advice on how to make money online. But sometimes it takes awhile for the “hammer to drop” and it didn’t take me long to realize this guy had something.

What he had was a bunch of methods on everything to do in making money online that worked like charms and one of the areas he excels in, is keyword and niche selection. Now, I buy anything he puts out and have referenced him a few times on this blog. Funny that isn’t it…after my first impressions of the guy.:)

Anyways, he has posted an amazing resource on his blog on where to find those money making niches and how to take advantage of them. You won’t believe what it is and will have one of those moments I mentioned above.

For example, if you have been taught that your advertising needs to be at the top of the page or above the fold, then you are asking for trouble. Google is going to be coming after you.

Why?

Well, it all gets down to user experience and Google is big on this. Now we are talking about those webmasters who literally take liberties and have all their ads above the fold…in other words, all you can see are ads and no content. This will get you penalized.

It’s about having content above the fold; content that the user is looking for. If they type in a search phrase and are taken to a site where all they see when they first land on it is ads, then they are going to quickly click away. That’s a bad user experience for Google. But if they come to a site where the title and content below it is the first thing they see and they stay on the site, then that’s fine. And from what we can gather, having ads above the fold in this situation should be okay.

There is an excellent report on this at searchengineland.com. In fact, it’s somewhat of guide to how many ads you can have above the fold of your site and could be the most important ten minutes you spend in front of your computer today.

What happens if you’re hit? Make changes, then wait a few weeks.

Similar to how last year’s Panda Update works, Google is examining sites it finds and effectively tagging them as being too ad-heavy or not. If you’re tagged that way, you get a ranking decrease attached to your entire site (not just particular pages) as part of today’s launch.

If you reduce ads above-the-fold, the penalty doesn’t instantly disappear. Instead, Google will make note of it when it next visits your site. But it can take several weeks until Google’s “push” or “update” until the new changes it has found are integrated into its overall ranking system, effectively removing penalties from sites that have changed and adding them to new ones that have been caught.

Google’s post explains this more:

– If you decide to update your page layout, the page layout algorithm will automatically reflect the changes as we re-crawl and process enough pages from your site to assess the changes.

– How long that takes will depend on several factors, including the number of pages on your site and how efficiently Googlebot can crawl the content.

– On a typical website, it can take several weeks for Googlebot to crawl and process enough pages to reflect layout changes on the site…..

So, still confused on how many ad you can have on your page? Don’t be. That article pretty much explains what you can and cannot do. More rules? Yes, but I think this makes some sense. The old days when sites were loaded with adsense and no content are gone; it also seems the days where ads dominate above the fold of a website could be gone also.

One of the problems with teaching people about getting sites indexed in the search engines is that too many teachers make it complicated.

My question is always…why? It’s simple. It’s not rocket science. Get some links back to your pages and the search engines will reward you. Do nothing and nothing happens. Does that make sense?

We’ve mentioned Mark Ling several times on this site and a post Mark recently did a post on this very same topic. What I like about it is that it’s simple to follow and straight to the point. Here are some of the ways you can get your site pages indexed:

- spread the word with social bookmarking
- submit articles to major directories
- internal linking
- ping your page whenever you create a new one
- leave value-added comments on other sites in your niche
- regularly update your site

How simple is that. Here’s more from Mark and each of the items listed in a little more detail. Then we’ll tell you what else you can do to give your pages a real boost.

Before we begin, here are two important points to consider:

First, you should be building links to the new page you want indexed, and not just your website homepage. It is important to build ‘deep’ links to all the content pages on your website, but many webmasters seem to ignore this and just build backlinks to their homepage.

For example, if you have the website www.example.com, and your new page (that you want to have indexed) is at www.example.com/new-page, then make sure you build links to that specific page.

Second, you should monitor your progress as you get new pages indexed. To do this, make sure you have added your website to the Traffic Travis Dashboard as a project (this is covered in detail here.)

You should also use Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools to keep track of your website. Both of these services are free and very easy-to-use. Google also provide answers to frequently asked questions about how Google search indexes websites.

We looked at this in our previous post and it might be worth going over it again. Simply contact webmasters with quality websites in your niche and ask them if they would like unique content. Andrew has posted an excellent post on his blog laying out a blueprint to make $100 a day online and if this is all you did in 2012 then you would be so far ahead of most other internet marketers that you would be in that small minority actually earning income online.

This is a great time of the year because as we head into a new year, we have new hopes and many of us just want to put the failures of the previous year behind us. I remember only too well about eight years ago when I was on a “losing streak”; that is, I was buying up every program that promised to make me money and the truth is, I had no chance of succeeding.

What made the difference?

Well, I realized I was putting the “cart before the horse”; trying to learn stuff I had no right knowing until I actually had a blueprint to work from. Buying $1000 traffic courses weren’t going to do me any good unless I had something to promote.

Get the picture?

Andrew Hansen is a successful internet marketer and has produced some excellent training programs. But it’s his free stuff that continues to amaze me and the following blueprint is stuff people are charging money for. Here’s what I found marketing during the holiday period. We’re talking from about the end of October to Christmas time. The big mistake most marketers make is they try to sell everything. I mean, they literally sign up as an affiliate for whoever; it could be Wal-Mart, Amazon, Target…anyone who has an affiliate program and they want to sell the entire store in one campaign.

That’s going to make you some money but here’s a secret…pick one or two products and generate the same energy into those. By doing this, you can focus of specific keywords; you’re targeted audience will diminish but hey, they are more than likely all going to be buyers. And that’s what you want.

In actual fact, it’s no different to any other time of the year. When a person is searching and they are ready to buy, they will be very specific with their search. You want them to find your page and it’s easy for you to do that by targeting the keyword phrase they type in. You have already anticipated what they are going to type in. Now all you have to do is wait for these buyers to “fall into your net”.

One of the things I do all the time is look for stuff that will help you make money online and usually it’s free. Lots of questions and the three above are three of the most popular. We see them every day come across our desk and I often wonder whether people over-analyze SEO. For your information, SEO stands for search engine optimization and comprises both on page and off page factors.

So what is SEO? An article at searchenginewatch.com from Mark Jackson has summed it up perfectly in my opinion. I’ve always thought that SEO was a combination of fact and creativeness. Combine the two and you are somewhere in the ball park of understanding what it is and how to use it to your advantage.

In fact, the science is not hard to understand or implement; the people who are able to be creative in testing different stuff are the ones who take their business to the next level.

The science in my opinion is easy; optimize for the right keyword; use a keyword rich title, get back links to your page; and incorporate a user focused aspect and you’re on the right track. That’s just a crash course but you get the picture. But when you start to use a little creative thinking to SEO practices then this is when the magic can start to happen.

I’ve worked with and befriended many incredibly bright SEOs in my years in this business. It is those who manage to blend the scientific skills with the creative thoughts on how to experiment/improve programs are the gems.

Getting creative with SEO is thinking of how a marketing program can encompass social, graphic design, link building, content generation, and PR to drive toward a common goal.

Getting creative with SEO is also about reworking a website’s design/code so that usability and accessibility improve, while maintaining brand guidelines and keeping with “look and feel” requirements, yet improving SEO.

Every day, we must get creative in determining how to best target keywords by determining which method of content generation gives us the best chance at gaining a presence in the search engines and – most importantly – engaging our audience.

Should we write a blog post? Should this be best handled in a press release? How about a video? Infographic? New “corporate” page on the site? There are a multitude of ways that we might determine to target a keyword via content…..

Are you getting the regular Clickbrief updates?

I know exactly what these people are talking about. They make a commission and get excited. Then nothing. They check their commission totals and see one payment but lots of zeros. It’s deflating. How the heck to people make thousands of dollars each month?

Well, the reality is it’s not that difficult but yu need to apply some simple things to your affiliate marketing which many don’t. The other problem I see is that many people will want to make money fast and get discouraged when they don’t see instant results. A little patience needs to be applied.
